چکیده

In this article, we present a web-based open source tool to support crossdisciplinary collaborative seriation with the following goals: to compare different matrix permutations, to discover patterns from the data, annotate it, and accumulate knowledge. Seriation is an unsupervised data mining technique that reorders objects into a sequence along a one-dimensional continuum to make sense of the whole series. Clustering assigns objects to groups, whereas seriation assigns objects to a position within a sequence. Seriation has been applied to a variety of disciplines including archaeology and anthropology; cartography, graphics, and information visualization; sociology and sociometry; psychology and psychometrics; ecology; biology and bioinformatics; cellular manufacturing; and operations research. Interestingly, across those different disciplines, there are several commonly emerging similar structural patterns. Visual Matrix Explorer allows users to explore and link those patterns, share an online workplace and instantly transmit changes in the system to other users.  2011 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Dissimilarity Plots: A Visual Exploration Tool for Partitional Clustering

For hierarchical clustering, dendrograms provide convenient and powerful visualization. Although many visualization methods have been suggested for partitional clustering, their usefulness deteriorates quickly with increasing dimensionality of the data and/or they fail to represent structure between and within clusters simultaneously. In this paper we extend (dissimilarity) matrix shading with ...

An experimental comparison of seriation methods for one-mode two-way data

Seriation aims at finding a linear order for a set of objects to reveal structural information which can be used for deriving data-driven decisions. It presents a difficult combinatorial optimization problem with its roots and applications in many fields including operations research. This paper focuses on a popular seriation problem which tries to find an order for a single set of objects that...

SerialRank: Spectral Ranking using Seriation

We describe a seriation algorithm for ranking a set of n items given pairwise comparisons between these items. Intuitively, the algorithm assigns similar rankings to items that compare similarly with all others. It does so by constructing a similarity matrix from pairwise comparisons, using seriation methods to reorder this matrix and construct a ranking. We first show that this spectral seriat...

Seriation and matrix reordering methods: An historical overview

Seriation is an exploratory combinatorial data analysis technique to reorder objects into a sequence along a one-dimensional continuum so that it best reveals regularity and patterning among the whole series. Unsupervised learning, using seriation and matrix reordering, allows pattern discovery simultaneously at three information levels: local fragments of relationships, sets of organized local...
